Ubuntu Linux

// January 11th, 2005 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

I’ve decided to give Ubuntu Linux a try, seeing as I’ve not ran a linux distro properly in a few months. The cd I downloaded was corrupted so I thought, that with the aid of Knoppix and chroot I’d do an install over the internet. I’ve got problems running depmod however and so my system starts the linux boot process but doesn’t finish it. After just over twenty four hours, lots of googling and posting in the Ubuntu Forums I’m just going to give up and redownload the cd. At least I’ve learnt how to use grub now.

I’ve got back in Stafford and started exam week. I had the databases exam first up, which I feel pretty confidant about. So fingers crossed! I’ve got Systems Programing and Computer Control Systems on Thursday and Professional and Enterprise Development on Friday.

New Years Eve

The plan for New Years was for Tom, Dan, Sara and I to meet at Toms, walk into Matlock and then catch the bus into Nottingham to go to Rock City. However, despite arriving at the bus stop twenty five minutes early, watching two busses go in the opposite direction and waiting for thirty minutes after the due time, we accepted that the bus wasn’t going to turn up. Tom kindly offered to drive there anyway (y). We ended up using ‘park ‘n’ ride’ to get there using Nottinghams tram system. The trams were very clean, ran every thirty minutes (even on New Years Eve!) and stop at numerous sites throughout Nottingham. Anyway we got into Rock City fine and dandy, had a great, if slightly surreal time singing YMCA in a rock club at midnight. Even managed to get Sara dancing, and we had a air gun fight on the dancefloor (y). Eventually though we drank the bar dry of water and went back to Toms to sleep off our excesses. Probably the best New Years Eve yet.

Cheap Meat

I’ve just checked my mail after a couple of days away from the computer and was greeted by over one hundred new blog comments notifications and around four hundred ‘please check this comment’ messages. All of it spam. This resulted in something like 20 times my usual page hit count and a lot of time spent deleting. To stop it happening again I’ve installed the Three Strikes Spam Protection Plugin. It looks quite nifty, lets hope it works.
