Google Desktop Search

// March 8th, 2005 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

Google Desktop Search (or GDS as it’s becoming known) has just been fully released. I reviewed the beta a while ago. The new version is much the same to most people, with the most notable addition being the ability to search more kinds of files. However google have included APIs for developers to create plug-ins for different filetypes to be searched by GDS, this has allowed several plug-ins to be developed already, google are hosting plug-ins which meet their standards on their site. The flip side to this is that the APIs also allow any windows programmer to access GDS to get information out of its index. So hopefully we’ll soon see programs that embed GDS inside theirselves. All this in a 700k download.

Wonder what the atmosphere is like at Microsoft right now..

The Green Room

Went to the Green Room last night, met Jayde, Toms new girl, as well as obviously Tom his self, Pip, Chloe and some of Jaydes friends. It was really really dead when I got there – 9 o’clock on a Friday night. Apparently the bar staff had been told that the police were coming in later, so all of the ‘under-agers’ and their friends didn’t turn up. The police only came to clarify something with the bouncers or something though.

I left about eleven having drank a few and having a couple before I left and managed to get to the chippy ten minutes before it should’ve closed but it was closed anyway. As was the Chinese. So I had a pizza once I came in. When I did come in I found my Mum and Sara watching a fitness video. Not doing the fitness actions, just watching it. The mind boggles.

A Regular Post

Spent this week trying to get my SDMCA assignment out of the way, I think I’m nearly half way through it now. Still got to finalise the programs, they’re 90% done but I’m struggling with sorting a listview control at the minute. Still can’t make my mind up over .net, sometimes I feel like I’m fighting it, sometimes I marvel at how much it speeds up my work.

Our new initative to discuss a current news item each day got off to a good start yesterday as we had two.

The first was a discussion on landfill sites and fly tipping which wasn’t the most interesting topic to me. I advocated heavy fines for everyone caught fly tipping, Nick argued that making landfill fees cheaper (with no viable idea where the money would come from) would be the best solution. It remained pretty much unresolved, the other two didn’t really join in.

We did have good debate well Nick, Evv and I did, over immigration yesterday, it arose after watching the news item on the Muslim girl who won the right to not wear school uniform and quickly esculated. After a good half hourish we pretty much decided that Nick is a fascist bully boy and I’m a bleeding heart liberal. Not exactly sure about Evv.

Going home in about half an hour for the weekend, can’t wait to see Sara and Tom again. It’s my Dads birthday and Mothers day too, so quite a good weekend to go home I feel.
