Vi

// July 22nd, 2005 // No Comments » // Uncategorized

While at work I spend probably upwards of three quarters of my time in vi, or using the ksh in vi mode. Now my fingers are expecting it everywhere, from text entry in word, to scrolling in every other application. I now resent having to move my fingers from the home row and grit my teeth everytime I realise I must, wishing everything had a Vi compatible mode.

Religous Hate Laws

// July 18th, 2005 // 10 Comments » // Uncategorized

There are plans underway to create laws banning incitement to religious hatred – the Racial and Religious Hatred Bill. Which sounds all well and dandy…

However this bill infringes on free speech. I don’t feel any need to say hatrous words about any religous groups (and indeed, some of my friends are religious) but I should have the right to say it. Saying things and doing them are two different things anyway…

One flaw with the bill is that it explicitly allows reading from religious texts, which in some cases are some of the most violent, hate-mongering texts anyway..

kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman that hath known man by lying with him. But all the little girls among the women, that have not known a man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves.

It claims to protect the free speech of comedians, what would it say about Bill Hicks saying “I’m going capture gideons for a hobby”? Where is the line drawn? Who decides what is comedy?

If religous idealogies are to gain protection what about political beliefs? What about classes? Which way round you like your egg?

Uncyclopedia

I’ve just stumbled onto the antithesis of Wikipedia; Uncyclopedia. It’s reason d’etre is:

…to provide the world’s misinformation in the least redeeming and most searingly sarcastic and humourous way possible.

It’s utterly hilarious, highlights I’ve read so far include: Aesops Fables, Vietcong, wikipedia and wikipedia land

There also seems to be some kind of deep fascination with Oprah Winfrey.

The Buxton Way

// July 14th, 2005 // No Comments » // General

I drove back home through Buxton today to avoid the traffic from Pikehalls harness racing. It probably would’ve been quicker to go through Pikehall, but I didn’t really want to sit still in the heat. The scenery driving to and through Buxton was lovely anyway, plus I got to drive through Chatsworth Park. The roads are smooth and near silent, so I had the windows all the way down, with a nice cool breeze while listening to the Manchester Philharmonic.

Took me nearly thirty minutes longer to get home though.

Chatsworth

Sara and I went for a walk in the parklands of Chatsworth today. It was quite nice, the first time I’ve been since being a wee lad. Kept sneezing and had itchy eyes after an hour or so though :( I’m probably sunburnt too.

Took some snaps, so here they are:

I took a another half dozen or so, but they look a bit samey, they lose their effect when they’ve been scaled down.

Londoninium

No doubt, everyones read about the London Bombings and know plenty about it. Thirty-seven people have died and another 50 more “seriously injured”, so relatively speaking the attacks weren’t that bad – especially as four bombs went off, it could’ve been much worse anyhow. It’s incredible that only two people died after seeing pictures of that bus.

What I also found interesting was hitting flikr and finding that they had 80+ photos taken and uploaded. Gave a chance to find out what it was looking like, for those of us without T.V.

Edit:
Forgot this other bunch of stuff I was going to say – the chances of our civil liberties being curtailed again has just massively increased. It’ll also be interesting to note whether any of the perpetuators had some form of valid I.D. or not….

Live 8

// July 6th, 2005 // No Comments » // General

Nice to see that some musicians haven’t just saw Live 8 as a publicity stunt,

have all decided to donate “extra royalties made from increased sales”.

Note that this means that say they were selling 1000 units a week, and that’s gone up to 10,000, they’ll only donate their royalties for 9000 units. Which is fair enough I suppose. The main thing to note is that the record companies haven’t said that they’ll dish out their extra royalties, surprisingly enough.
